Noncontact velocity measurements date back to 1973 when BETA LaserMike developed its first Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) system. Although BETA LaserMike primarily designed the first LDV system for the fluid flow research market, in 1984, BETA LaserMike applied this technology to the steel and aluminum industry. BETA LaserMike sold its first LaserSpeed system to Kaiser Aluminum for measuring the length of hot aluminum strips. To date, more than 2500 BETA LaserMike LaserSpeed systems are installed in steel, aluminum and other non-ferrous mills around the globe

该应用为冷轧应用中最广泛的,如宝钢硅钢厂新上的单机架可逆硅钢轧机,即采用了BETA LaserMIKE 激光测速仪进行质量流控制,大大提高了轧机的厚度控制精度,提供了成材率。
